“Let’s not put a limit on God”
Church Wigan are delivering over 1000 Christmas Day Hampers across the town.
Working across the seven hubs, Revd Rachel Sheehan and the Church Wigan Food Ministry team expected to prepare 300 hampers to support families this Christmas, but after declaring “let’s not put a limit on God”, the latest count is 1136!
The Christmas food hampers, with all the Christmas trimmings, will include specially pre-prepared vegetables, after the team carefully listened to families who said they didn’t have the facilities to prep the vegetables themselves. The hampers will contain a Christmas card from Church Wigan, alongside the Christmas Blessing and beautiful knitted angels. The churches are also putting together smaller, treat hampers focusing on households who they know may particularly need encouragement and blessing this season.
Church Wigan were approached by local businesses eager to support families this Christmas. Local collection points have been set up to receive food donations. Residents across Wigan (and beyond) have also donated financially to the project, keen to play a part in offering “hope in a hamper”.
For Church Wigan, this project has developed out of the key role churches across the town have played in supporting food provision during the pandemic. It also forms part of their Light in the Darkness initiative, bringing joy to households in Wigan between Halloween and Christmas.
Reflecting on what it has been like working across the seven hubs, Revd Rachel, who is the Hub Leader at the Parish of Wigan North West and Coordinator of the Wigan Food Ministry says “it is a joy to be a part of this team, all the hubs have been working together, we couldn’t have done this on our own”.
