Cop26 Global Day of Action - Moment of Kindness

Faith and community groups are encouraged to join us for a ‘Moment of Kindness’, in solidarity for climate justice as the Cop26 coalition march passes Liverpool Cathedral on Saturday November 6.

Together Liverpool invites people of all faiths and none to make a banner or bring along a percussion instrument, to take part in this Global Day of Action as world leaders gather in Glasgow for the UN Cop26 climate summit.

Thousands of people are expected to join a city-wide Liverpool march calling for decisive action to halt the crisis, starting with speakers in Sefton Park at midday.

The procession is expected to pass Liverpool Cathedral between 12.45pm and 1.15pm, and Together Liverpool will be hosting a ‘Moment of Kindness’ on the plaza, for churches, community and faith groups to show support, as the march passes down Upper Duke Street.

We are delighted that we will be joined by the Hope Street Harmonies choir, to provide uplifting songs as we welcome marchers passing the plaza, and hand out apples as nourishment, as part of our Network of Kindness project to support social action.

We will be led in song by ordinand and community artist Adeyinka Olushonde, who is also the Diocese of Liverpool’s Slavery truth project researcher. Space is limited but any church choirs who would like to join us between 12.30pm and 1.30pm please contact Deb.James@Togetherliverpool.org.uk to enquire.

Anyone is welcome to bring along a drum or percussion instrument to help show our encouragment. We will then join the march as it travels through the city centre via St Luke’s church, and on to a rally with speakers at Derby Square.

It comes a month after more than 200 walkers from 50 churches joined the Rise to the Moment Cop26 - Merseyside churches relay on October 8 & 9, carrying prayers for climate justice to Liverpool Cathedral, in an event supported by Christian Aid, Faiths 4Change, and Together Liverpool.

Together Liverpool chair of Trustees Rev Canon Dr Ellen Loudon, Canon Chancellor at Liverpool Cathedral and Director of Social Justice for the Diocese of Liverpool, who will be on the plaza to lead prayers before we welcome the march, said: “The climate crisis is our most urgent matter of social justice, affecting every one of us right now, in particular people in some of the world’s most disadvantaged communities in the global south.

“We will be praying for world leaders to make good decisions to protect all life on God’s precious planet. We will also be making some joyful noise to encourage marchers on their way and say thank you for coming together in solidarity for climate justice.

“To witness the 200 people arriving at Liverpool Cathedral bearing thousands of prayers during the the Rise to the Moment churches relay was one of the most encouraging actions we have witnessed in recent months.

“The Diocese of Liverpool is committed to supporting the Church of England in its mission to achieve Net Carbon Zero by 2030 and we encourage all in our network to continue to educate ourselves, pray, and speak truth to those in power.”

The Liverpool demonstration is organised by a broad coalition of around 30 groups including unions, environmental campaign, political and faith groups. If anyone would like to volunteer to be a steward at the event please email: liverpool@cop26coalition.org
